Abstract

The article is devoted to missionary activity of German Baptist preachers in Volyn in the second part of 19th – beginning of 20th century. The author points out that proselytism is one of the Baptist peculiarities, which comes from Christ’s command to preach the Gospel. This fact helps to understand German Baptists’ viewpoint on missionary activity in Volyn province. The author discovered that in 1860s Baptists preachers spread out their beliefs among German colonists, who were Lutheran of Mennonite. Since 1870s they started working among Orthodox population of the area. G. Pavlyuk estimates the role of church conventions in Neidorf in mission coordination in the area and outside of it. She also analyzes the legal status of Baptist believers in the empire and how their activity was impacted by the changes in legislation. On the basis of archive materials, she proves that the missionary activity of Baptist preachers was greatly hampered by the Orthodox church and local authorities. Before the First World War, it almost stopped due to mass arrests and the eviction of German colonists to the remote regions of the Russian Empire.
